The Zaagkuildrift road and Kgomo Kgomo area is one of Gautengs best birding areas, as the road provides for good bushveld birding along the Pienaars Rivier floodplain. In late summer when the floodplain is in spate, this becomes one of the most productive water and shorebird areas in the region.
Madikwe is one of the larger game reserves in South African, and boasts good numbers of the Big 5. Travel in the park is only via guided drives, and this gives great opportunities for photography.
Pilanesberg is situated in an extinct volcano crater, which is one of the largest volcanic complexes of its type in the world. The area has good plains, bushveld and mountainous habitat leading to a great diversity of sepcies.
